West Coast Area held our annual Campstove Cook-out on Sunday, Oct. 29th, at Deas Island. This event is organized by the Area Camping committee and is open to patrols of Pathfinders, Rangers, and Trex.
Each patrol cooks up a 3-course harvest feast for the judges, one course at a time. As soon as the appetizer is served, it's on to prepping the main course. Then repeat the process for dessert. This schedule requires focus, time management, and some basic kitchen skills. Plus plenty of teamwork and fun! The catch is .... you don't always get the ingredients you want. Patrols take turns selecting one ingredient at a time, so there's always a chance that something will run out. Adaptability and thinking on your feet are important skills for this challenge. It was a sunny day for outdoor cooking. The teams showed amazing creativity in the kitchen and with their meal presentation! A finely-crafted dish description can swing the vote sometimes, so a wordsmith is welcome on every team. The judges were game to try all the usual – and unusual – conconctions, looking for presentation, taste, and use of key and bonus ingredients. Congratulations to all the teams and the 1st New Westminster Pathfinders for achieving Overall Culinary Supremacy!
